   "I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me." - [Exodus 20:5b (KJV).

Introduction:

"She has her mother's eyes but her nose is exactly like her father's..." Time and time again, we have at one point said or heard someone else say something that sounds like the sentence above. The reality of the kind of assertion is that the child has the physical characteristics of the parents. The same is allusion is true in the spiritual realm.

Generational Curses Defined::

Deuteronomy 28:15-68 parades a listing of generational curses in fifty-three verses.
According to these verses of scripture, a generational curse is basically defilement, a spiritual captivity, oppression or curse that is passed down from one generation to the next. Essentially, they can manifest as a stubborn sin or a seemingly intractable pattern of failure because one of their forbearers sinned and brought a curse on the entire lineage.

Generational curses can manifest in scenarios where the father for instance, has a problem with uncontrollable anger, his sons have the same issue and their grandpa had the same problem too. Others can manifest as persistent irrational fears or depression, an illness and/or negative traits or habits such as alcoholism, verbal or physical abuse, pornography, racism, bitterness, or fear, Generational behaviorism goes beyond learned behavior and generational influences have the ability to bring blessings or curses - to one's life by bringing judgment or bondage during an individual's life; and reducing the quality of life, until that individual addresses the sin issues that put the curses into place.

Biblical Examples of Generational Curses::

» In Genesis 3, Adam and Eve sinned and introduced sickness, death and murder into their family, Not long after that original sin, Cain murdered his brother Abel while humanity in general, still deal with Adam's sin and the resulting curses.
» In Genesis 9:18-10:32, Noah's drunkenness led to his son Ham dishonoring him. As the result, an entire linage of people was and is still under a curse in the land of Canaan.
» In Genesis 16, Abraham went against God's will for him and fathered a son in the flesh; this robbed the birthright from the firstborn son, which went on for the next three generations, and in the next five generations the youngest prospered instead of the oldest.
» In Genesis 20:1-2, Abraham lied to Abimelech about his wife and a spirit of lying and deception manifesting in his children. Jacob lied to his father concerning his birthright. His sons in turn lied to him about the disappearance of Joseph.
» In 2 Samuel 11, David, the man after God's own heart fell into sexual sin with Bathsheba. He committed adultery and then had her husband Uriah murdered to cover up his sexual sin. As a result, we see a history of incest, rape, rebellion and womanizing in his children. It's a spiritual law!

Gehazi: The Terrible Consequences of a Generational Curse:

Gehazi is introduced as Elijah's servant in 2 Kings 5 and in Vs 27, we see how he brought the generational curse of leprosy upon himself, his children and his descendants forever because of greed, deception and disloyalty. God had used Elisha to cure Naaman, an Aramean army general of his leprosy. With joy and gratitude, the soldier brought gifts for the man of God; all of which he rejected. As the General was returning, promising to serve the God Israel forever, Gehazi ran after him, met up with him and lied that Elisha his master had sent him to receive some of the gifts he had previously rejected. He collected the gifts and hid them before returning to his master Elisha His actions fetched him a curse from his master and the bible mentions that he left the room leprous - his skin as white as snow.

Good News: The Price for Generational Curses has been Paid in FULL:

Jeremiah 31:29 In those days they shall say no more, The fathers have eaten a sour grape, and the children's teeth are set on edge."

Generational curses may be self-imposed or it may come from any of these sources: God Himself, an act (or acts) of disobedience, treachery, injustice to the weak or helpless, illicit or unnatural sex, anti-Semitism, trust in man, perjury, stinginess towards God, preaching false gospel, idol worship, God's "mouthpieces", relational authority, unscriptural covenants, occult participation, servants of Satan; as well as abominations in the home.

Regardless of the source, Christ was made a curse, so we can be freed from the curses that sin. Gal 3:13). The blood of Jesus was shed as atonement for sins so repentance of the sin in question, faith in Christ, and a life consecrated to the Lord will address the cause and effect of every generational curse.
